BAE SYSTEMS
During 2003, we were awarded the contract to design and build two cleanroom facilities for BAE Systems at their new offices at Capability Green, Luton.

The two cleanrooms each measuring 314m2 and 62m2 were designed and built to Classification ISO Class 7 & 8 with localised Class 5 (BS EN ISO 14644-1-1999). We were given the responsibility of providing the complete design and construction the both facilities with all support services.

The items that were designed, installed and project managed by ourselves included:

• Ceilings
• Filtration (HEPA & ULPA)
• Lighting/Emergency Lighting
• Over Pressure & Return Air Grilles
• Temperature/Humidity Sensors
• Particle Sensors
• Pressure Sensors
• Commissioning
• Airflow Balancing
• Room pressure differentials
• Filter integrity leak tests
• Lighting levels
• Validation/Certification

Each cleanroom was built within an RF screened enclosure, manufactured and installed ETS Lindgren. Prior to the shield being constructed, we carried out the installation of the main supply/return ductwork systems above the enclosure. Once the shield was erected, cleanroom steel partitioning was then installed, essentially creating a box within a box. A suspended ceiling grid system was installed which housed the HEPA/ULPA filters, lightbox modules and other services.

The main mechanical plant which serves all areas of the building including the two cleanrooms was installed and commissioned by Skanska UK. We worked in conjuntion with Skanska to ensure that the correct volumes of air they were providing at the main plant corresponded with our design data to achieve the specified cleanliness levels and differential room pressures.

In addition to the two cleanrooms, we were also responsible for designing the air conditioning and ventilation systems for fifteen RF screened rooms throughout the building. During October 2004, we carried out the final commissioning, testing and validation of the two facilities with the rooms being handed over to the client towards the end of 2004.
